TEESSIDE'S teenage sprint
sensation Richard Kilty flies
off today with the Great
Britain team competing in
next week's 12th IAAF World
Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz,
Poland.
The 18-year-old Gateshead
Harrier, who won the England
Under-20 200m title in the
World Junior Trial at Bedford
last month in a time of 21.40,
is also named in the 4x100m
relay squad.
Kilty's selection continues a
memorable season after 100m
victories in the North-East
and Northern Championships
and a 200m gold medal performance
in the regional championships
in May.

Kilty achieved the World
Junior Championships qualifying
time with a personalbest
21.19 secs 200m victory
which helped Gateshead Harriers
win their opening
British Athletics League Division
One match at the International
Stadium last
month. He will join Milton
Keynes Chris Clarke, who ran
20.87 in Leverkusen, Germany,
last August, in the twobend
race in Poland.
Kilty's World Junior Championships
selection means he
will miss next weekend's English
Schools Championships
at Gateshead International
Stadium, ruling out his
chances of a hat-trick of gold
medals following 100m victories
at intermediate and senior
levels in the last two
years.
Gateshead Harriers will be
without Kilty in their second
BAL match at Carlisle this afternoon,
when they will be
trying to maintain their place
at the top of Division One.
The teenager was runner-up
in the 100m before winning
the 200m in the opening fixture
last month, when Harriers
got off to a flying start.
Gateshead climbed into the
second top division after three
consecutive BAL promotions.
Sunderland Harrier Bob
Laidler set a new British Masters
Over-80 shot put record of
8.13m in the North-East Veterans'
League at Monkton
Stadium, South Shields.
North Shields Polytchnic's
Michael Dawson won the
Tynedale 10K road race in 33
mins 5 secs, beating Heaton
Harrier James Buis by 16 seconds.
Former North-East Harrier
League champion Claire
Simpson (Chester-le-Street)
won the women's race in 36
mins 12 secs, finishing 15 second
clear of Sunderland's
Michelle Holt.
