All that jazz
AN extra dimension was added to Jazz
North East's On the Outside Festival,
which starts tomorrow, when singer
Maggie Nicols revealed that she may
throw a bit of tap dancing into her act.
Scots-born Nicols actually began her
career at the age of 15 as a dancer at
London's legendary Windmill Theatre,
and later went on to perform at such
prestigious venues at the Moulin Rouge
in Paris. But from the 1970s she
became increasingly recognised as one
of the world's finest improvising
vocalists, and it was that talent that
prompted Jazz North East to invite her
to take part in the festival. Organiser
Paul Bream says: "We asked all the
invited musicians if they had any
particular technical requirements and it
was in response to our query that
Maggie said she'd like a tap board, in
case the music inspires her to dance.
"In fact, Maggie has never completely
abandoned her dance activities, but
these days they are fully integrated into
the music rather than being a separate
routine. Effectively the tap becomes
another instrument to add to the mix,
alongside her voice and the more
conventional' jazz instruments like
saxophone and trumpet. Our festival is
dedicated to the musically unexpected,
so this a great addition to the
possibilities."
On the Outside is at the Old Town Hall,
Gateshead. The first session starts at
7.30pm tomorrow, and continues
through Saturday and Sunday. Tickets
available on the door, priced at £12/£10
concessions/£3 students.
