CD REVIEWS

Tim Garland/The Northern Underground Orchestra (Jazz Action JA11)
Due North by the latest incarnation of Tim Garland's Underground Orchestra is a fascinating mix of composition and improvisation.

New pieces by Tim, Nikki Iles, Tommy Smith and Adam Dennis provide inspiration and framework for solos by, among others, Paul Booth, Lewis Watson, Gwilym Simcock, Asaf Sirkis and Tim himself. With vocal contributions from soul singer Hannah Jones, it's a very satisfying and encouraging album, nicely recorded in the Redworth Hall Hotel.

John Abercrombie & John Ruoco/Topics (Challenge CHR70137)
A surprising duet of guitar and clarinet in a delightful mix of familiar tunes and new ones. It's deliberate, thoughtful music and, as the notes say, the more you listen, the more you hear.

Diane Schuur/Some Other Time (Heads Up HUCD3138)
Dedicated to her mother, who died when Diane was 13, the singer revisits the songs she heard when growing up, such as Blue Skies and It's Magic.A very enjoyable disc and a definite return to her jazz roots
