CD REVIEWS

George Lewis in HiFi. . . plus (Upbeat URCD221)One of the New Orleans clarinetist's finer albums, on CD at last. This was recorded in San Francisco with a strong lead from trumpeter Thomas Jefferson and the dependable rhythm section of Alton Purnell, Slow Drag Pavageau and Joe Watkins. The plus is a beautifully clear session with Lewis strongly featured with Dick Oxtot's small group.

Gone in the Air/Chris Biscoe Quartet (Trio Records TR578) The late Eric Dolphy would have been 80 this year and this magnificent recording is Chris Biscoe's tribute to a remarkable talent. Featured on alto sax, alto clarinet and alto flute, with Tony Kofi also on alto sax, Larry Bartley bass and Stu Butterfield drums, he's chosen a delightful programme of Dolphy's compositions plus Jitterbug Waltz and Stolen Moments which Dolphy also recorded. The playing is spot on. Great sleeve notes. I hope this will be a winner.
