WHAT'S ON

The Sue Ferris Quintet is at the Travellers Rest, Cockerton tonight and the Michael Garrick Sextet is at Caedmon Hall, Gateshead, tomorrow, 0191-4338420, and at Darlington Arts Centre on Saturday, 01325-486555.

Marilyn Mazur/Elixir (ECM 173 7345) A whole hour of percussion might seem a little daunting, but this is one of the most varied, musical and enjoyable albums you could hear. Although her regular colleague Jan Garbarek is also heard on half the album, on tenor and soprano saxes and flute, it's Mazur's sounds you notice with vibes, marimba, gongs, cymbals, bells and various drums. With 21 short improvised pieces, each exploring the individual sounds, this is truly inspirational.

Marcin Wasilewski Trio/January (ECM 173 7345) Previously known as the Polish Jazz Trio or the Trio backing Tomasz Stanko or Manu Katche, this second ECM album helps establish them in their own right. It starts ever so gently with Wasilewski's own composition, The First Touch, but the pulse gradually quickens. Prince's Diamonds and Pearls and Carla Bley's King Korn are also included in another beautifully recorded and nicely balanced record.
