Folk
June 19, 2008
THIS is a week packed with superlatives and highlights for the region's folk fans, beginning tonight, when Canada's best singer-songwriter and supreme entertainer James Keelaghan starts his UK tour at Skelton's Duke William.
Tomorrow Vin Garbutt is at Skelton Golf Club, and Reeth's Memorial Hall presents an evening with the musicians who made up the late John Wright's band. They're also at Bishop Auckland Town Hall on Saturday, with American songwriter Christene le Doux in support.
Knowing how popular John was with local folk fans, I would check for ticket availability before turning up for the show. Saturday's other offerings include the great songwriter John Connolly at Kirkby Fleetham's Black Horse, and a very special concert at Gateshead's Sage when one of the best bands of the last 20 years takes time to reform for a limited number of concerts.
Whippersnapper was formed by Dave Swarbrick in the early 1980s and this will be the first time the original line-up, featuring Chris Leslie, Kevin Dempsey and Martin Jenkins, has played together for almost 20 years.
Sunday brings the multi-talented Brian Peters to Westoe Club in South Shields, and on Monday local songwriter Jack B Burness will be at The Foresters in Coatham Mundeville. Finally, Murton's John Wrightson Band will be at Newton Aycliffe's Candlelight Club for a varied night of powerful songs and first-class entertainment. Next week I'll be bringing news of some great new folk CDs that will be out soon, and don't forget Beverley Festival is happening all this weekend just down the road apiece, with its usual array of top-class acts. Quite a week, you must agree.
