I'M just back from a great weekend of folk festivals, with a nice new event near Newark, where the promoters seem to have a strong liking for North Eastern bands and singers, which the Midlands audience seems to share.

We had a great time among old friends and new acquaintances, before zooming across the country to a very different gathering on Merseyside at the Wirral Folk On The Coast festival. That was a somewhat more sedate affair, but no less enjoyable for that, showing that perhaps with folk music, you can please all the people all the time (didn't Bob Dylan say that? ).

Crowd pleasers across the region this week include the ever-classy Allan Taylor at Hartlepool's Studio tomorrow, and a toss of the dime between two different American performers on Saturday, when traditional singer Jeff Warner comes to Washington's Davy Lamp and the legendary Julie Felix celebrates her 70th birthday in style with two shows at Gateshead's Sage, at 2pm and 8pm. There's some fine acoustic blues from Eric Bibb at the Sage on Sunday, and on Tuesday, North Yorkshire lassie Wendy Arrowsmith is at Croxdale's Daleside Arms. Finally, a sly mention for my good friends at Badapple Theatre who present their celebrated play about James Herriott, An Honorary Yorkshireman at Reeth Memorial Hall tonight, a venue that is fast becoming a spotlight for the best in folk music and doorstep entertainment of the finest kind.
