Folk
May 22, 2008
THERE'S something of a star-studded week ahead for local folk music fans, starting
this very night with a concert by Irish supergroup Patrick Street at Newcastle's
Irish Centre.
Staying on Tyneside, top English duo Spiers and Boden pay a visit to Byker's
Cumberland Arms tomorrow night, and then on Saturday, up and coming duo Tom
Kitching and Greg Bartlett are at Washington's Davy Lamp.
Throughout this coming weekend there's plenty of folk to be heard at the Ryedale
Folk Festival, which runs until Monday at the Folk Museum in Hutton-le-Hole,
and boasts a line-up that includes Dave Goulder, Richard Grainger, Chris Parkinson
and Maeve MacKinnon.
Rachel Unthank and her Winterset gang are at Hexham's Queen's Hall on Saturday,
while our choice on Sunday is between Keeper's Fold at Westoe Club in South
Shields and top man of the moment, Seth Lakeman, at Gateshead's Sage.
A bonus attraction on Monday is an allCanadian show at Gateshead's Little Theatre,
featuring two of my favourite acts from the prairies, The Wailing Jennies and
the great songwriter, Stephen Fearing. This show, along with everything else
this week, comes highly recommended and due to the current popularity of these
acts, I would advise phoning the venue first for ticket availability.
Note also, that my gig with the Bad Pennies at TudhPoe tomorrow is cancelled,
giving me ample opportunity to check out some of these other fabulous shows.
