Steve Earle: Copperhead Road, Deluxe Edition (Universal Records)

IT was the raunchy lead guitar opening to Steve Earle's Guitar Town that made the Nashville moguls sit up and take note.

I remember the title cut from his debut album in 1986 being one of the most requested tracks on the radio show I was presenting at the time.

Earle followed up with a series of landmark albums, including his third full-length release, Copperhead Road. Twenty years on and by way of celebration, Universal records has released the album in Deluxe Edition form expanding the original gold album with a second disc of 17 'live' 1987-1989 performances.

Disc One features the title track, the Celtic Johnny Come Lately backed by The Pogues, the bluegrass sounding Nothing But A Child with Maria McKee and You Belong To Me.

Disc Two features 11 previously unreleased tracks which were recorded before the Copperhead Road album and include The Devil's Right Hand, Brown and Root, Wheels and a performance of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. From the opening title track through to the guitar-twanging intro of Guitar Town it conjures up thoughts of that musical revolution of the 80s and it's a piece of country rock history that should appeal to all music lovers.
