REVIEWS

D'Amore: Garth Knox (ECM New Series 476 6369) Violist Garth Knox and cellist Agnes Vesterman present music for the Viola d'amore from 1600 to the present, with works ranging from Hume, Marais and Ariosti to Celtic traditional sources.

The Viola Of My Life: Morton Feldman (ECM 4767777) Painting with sound is central to Feldman's music. Violist Marek Konstantynowicz and the Cikada Ensemble depict these four pieces in broad colours, giving the dense harmonies an ethereal spaciousness. Pieces are accompanied by several instruments, piano and full orchestra.

The Hilliard Ensemble: Auvidi vocem (ECM4766353) Music of the English Renaissance, as encapsulated by composers Tallis, Tye and Sheppard, is given a rare reading in this glorious display of polyphony. Recorded in the clear acoustics of the Sankt Gerold monastery in the Austrian Alps. Highly recommended.
