The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian (PG)
IN every respect, this second
Narnia movie from the Disney
studio is bigger and bolder than
the first, a more magical
instalment.
Bigger isn't necessarily
better. And the promised darker
tone simply means that a few
people, and creatures of
indeterminate origin, get killed in a
PG way.
Andrew Adamson directs
again as the Pevensie children -
Peter (William Moseley), Susan
(Anna Popplewell), Edmund
(Skandar Keynes) and Lucy
(Georgie Hensley) - are whisked
back from Second World War
London to the magical kingdom to
lend Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes)
a helping hand.
This rightful heir to
the throne is first seen fleeing the
ancestral home to escape an
assassination attempt by wicked
uncle Miraz (Sergio Castellitto,
behaving like a rejected Bond
villain).
The Pevensie quartet are
stunned to learn that Narnia's
delightful residents have been
driven into hiding by Miraz and his
cohorts. The scale is certainly
impressive, culminating in a
climactic battle that's breathtaking
in its scope and gets as savage as
it can and still get a PG certificate.
The acting doesn't always match
the excellent special effects,
although Barnes, with strange
accent, swashes a mean buckle as
the princely pretender. A swordwielding
mouse named
Reepicheep (voiced by Eddie
Izzard) is fun in a Disney cartoon
sort of way and Liam Neeson roars
to the rescue as the voice of Aslan
the lion.
Stars: Ben Barnes, William
Moseley, Anna Popplewell,
Skandar Keynes, Georgie Hensley,
Sergio Castellitto, Peter Dinklage,
Warwick Davis and the voices of
Eddie Izzard, Liam Neeson
Running time: 144 mins
Rating: Three stars
