THE North-East's latest Lottery winner yesterday told how he celebrated with a cup of tea and plans to splash out by building a new shed.

Mick Wigham, 62, from Thornley, County Durham, won £524,000 at the weekend after he shared a £4.2m jackpot with eight other winners.

He plans to buy timber and will get someone to build the shed for him, adding that he does not want a ready-made version from a DIY store. He said: "You can put your hand through them.

"I want somewhere to store all of the gear.

"The shed will be somewhere to park the motorised scooter, lawnmowers and strimmers. It will also be somewhere to potter about in."

Mr Wigham, who retired as chairman of the Thornley branch of the Age Concern charity in June last year, plans to buy the council house he shares with his 60-year-old wife, Liz.

They intend to buy new windows, roof and a kitchen.

The couple can now look forward to enjoying retirement in the lap of luxury and have decided to go on holiday to Devon, and to treat their two children, Joanne, 39, and John, 32, as well as their four grandchildren.

Mr Wigham was sitting at home watching the live draw on television and could not believe his eyes when he saw his numbers come up. He said: "I was in shock when I realised I had matched all six numbers. While I remained very calm, Liz was the opposite and became very excited. We celebrated with a nice cup of tea."

He has played the Lottery since it began more than 13 years ago, and plays the same numbers every Wednesday and Saturday.

The ticket was bought at Taylor's Newsforce, in Peterlee, with the winning numbers of 7, 12, 19, 23, 46 and 48.

Mr Wigham said: "The timing of the win is perfect, and we are looking forward to planning the future and taking life easy."
